When we got back to our house in France, after being in UK for three weeks, we found that the pump in our basement that pumps out water when necessary had caused a fuse problem with the supply to the kitchen and basement (instead of just fusing its own supply). The kitchen fridge/freezer and the six-drawer freezer in the pantry had both completely defrosted during our absence.  Not the end of the world, just really sad, as the freezer contained all our produce this year from the garden, including raspberries,loads of pots of tomato sauces, chestnuts, cubes of pesto, beans, peas (my absolute favourite), leeks, and lots of wild mushrooms, local peaches, and lots and lots of pots of other things. Hey, ho.

So sorry to read about your power cut disaster.  It must be heart breaking for you losing all your crops like that.

Thank you for the good wishes! I should have added to my  post that as we were emptying out rotten stuff and not enjoying it (after our all-day drive down through France), I thought of everyone in the UK who had had no harvest at all due to the awful weather.  At least we did have a relatively good year in the veg patch!

Well done for trying to be upbeat, but preserving lots of things is a lot of work, and every meal for the next few months you will have to be eating boughten stuff and you will miss your homegrown stuff.

So sorry to hear that you got home after your family catch-up in UK and all your freezer produce is lost.  Being tired from a long journey and then having to deal with a slimy mess is in itself awful, but losing your own produce is worse.  You are very brave about this.  Yes indeed, a warm, early spring is called for to get lettuces and rocket and cress for some homegrown fresh food.  Hope 2013  will more than make up for the lost produce.

If I'm upbeat now, it is because I have reason to be, down here.  OK my sprouts are not much good (well, awful!), and the broccoli started sprouting in November, and is now all over the place - but we have good kale, and good hearty savoy cabbages ready to harvest.  Also lots of growing lettuces, and a forest of rocket and coriander, all growing in the open.  So we will be eating good for us salads instead of pasta with tomato sauce.  We also have lots of bottled fruit.  I am determined to buy as little as possible!
