I'd rather like a general knowledge one.  I'm sort of OK on veggies, trees, and wild flowers, but leisure gardening I'm not much cop, but I enjoy a good general knowledeg quiz.

Go to the top of the class

I did a google and found this;

Lancelot Brown's nickname 'Capability' came from his fondness for speaking about a country estate having a great 'capability' for improvement. Lancelot Brown's popularity reached a peak at the time of his death.

Lancelot Brown's reputation reached its nadir in the 1880s.

It then began to recover and by 1980 he was being recognised as a genius of English garden design. Lancelot Brown described himself as a 'place-maker', not a 'landscape gardener'.

It was the nineteenth century which saw 'landscape gardening' become a trade name.

Can I quibble with number 10 too?

from RHS website:

Cutting back bulb foliage
Wait for a minimum of six weeks after the end of flowering before cutting back the dead foliage, and ideally only remove foliage when it is yellow and straw-like. Until this time, the bulbs should be watered and fed as above. Also, do not tie or knot the leaves.
Also 1:

Thanks for doing this Teegee - it's fun. Also a good learning experience. As you see, full of righteous indignation,  I checked out my "wrong answers" online!! :tongue3:

QuoteWait for a minimum of six weeks after the end of flowering before cutting back the dead foliage, and ideally only remove foliage when it is yellow and straw-like. Until this time, the bulbs should be watered and fed as above. Also, do not tie or knot the leaves.

The key word here is "ideally" but I find most years in my area this would take ages to get to this state, and I wouldn't be able to get my annual bedding in, so I am quite happy to start cutting them down when there is about an inch (25mm) of yellowing at the tip of the leaves.

I also start my feeding programme when they come into bud.

But I do agree that it's a good learning experience!

Another thing I would like to point out is; if you read my first quiz, I said I got my questions from books and like you I had a difference of opinion with some of the answers!

This is one of them !

I put this mainly down to my location because as we have often see on the forums many of us do the same things or similar things at different times but it does not mean we are wrong in doing so, particularly if we have some success with what WE do!

I was always taught that if you find a way of doing something that works for you and it's different from what it says in a book, then forget what it says in the book!

So as I see it; it is just another one of the peculiarities of gardening!

But I am enjoying the fact that so many of you are enjoying the quizzes as that is what I set out to do, and if we learn anything from them then that is a bonus!

Thanks for showing such an interest...Tg
