In the end I think I had 8-10 plants that successfully grew on our manure heap, and now we have over 80 fruit, the majority of which are ripe, the rest won't be long.  i'll have to keep a close eye on possible frost though! They are all Waltham, courtesy of Galina (thank you!) three different packets of seeds,  so the shapes are slightly varied.

Jealous! This year I got...2 fruit, and very small.

Double jealous - the slugs got my 8 plants!! then too wet to germinate more!!  Where are you from..

Godness - these seeds were sent a few years ago and all .......  glad they came good.  Yes I can see the ones that have a fat neck and the others!  Lovely!

Peanuts - that is a quality crop!!

What varieties do you grow - I've been looking for a good productive BNS.  I got 8 fruit from 4 plants this year and was moderately happy with that unitl now!!!

I feel quite bad when others feel understandably and reasonably jealous - I'm sorry! We are very very lucky to be where we are in SW France - although it isn't always a bed of roses.  There can be ferocious storms here, with little warning.  Three years ago in July there was a severe and short hailstorm centered on our village, and over 200 houses (including ours) lost their roofs - very frightening.  Our garden was a complete disaster, and all the veg and fruit were  shredded. It was after that that Galina so kindly sent me three packets of  her Butternut squash seeds, all Waltham.  It was the last of those that I sowed this year with such success.

Roasting the seeds?  We've bought these roasted in Spain and couldn't get on with them, the outside husks seemed inedible. GrannieAnnie - what do you do to them to make them edible - please tell me!

I must have tough teeth but they ARE chewy.
We just oil them a little and bake with some salt 300 degree oven about 20 min in single layer just til golden brown.
