nice figs

We picked some figs today. Here are  two of them sitting on an egg box to give an idea of the size.

They look great, have you tried them sliced on top of porridge then spinkled with brown sugar it is delicious!

Oh my! You might just as well add a spoonful of honey and some sliced banana as well. :)

Nice figs!
In the walled garden overhere we have also a fig tree. How do I know they are ripe enough to get them of?

They go dark when ready and twist off easily, bit like an apple is ready. Sometimes I find that when they are really ripe they "tear" a bit as they come off as get  a bit soft.
A walled garden sounds nice :D

They are indeed lovely figs, and on the subject of figs, I have a question.   I bought a fig in a pot earlier in the "Summer" from Aldi.  It looks nice and healthy, and it must be happy on the patio because just yesterday I noticed with great excitement that it has four tiny green figs on it.  Will they stay on and get bigger next year?

Nope, they will drop off, as often do the first figs that pop up on the tree in spring time. But the later fruit that appears around June will stay and ripen.

Living in the North-East (UK) would it be better to leave it in a pot and bring it into the conservatory for the winter, or could I risk planting it against a south facing fence at the lottie?

Mine is outside at the allotment.  It started off as a small cutting about 8 years ago and is now probably over 12 feet high and just as wide.  When it was small I used to protect it in the winter with a heap of straw.
