Damaged onions

It looks like a few of my onions have been blown over.  ::)

The roots are torn almost up to the bulb. Any hope of replanting these to let them gain a little extra weight or is it better just to use them up? My suspicions are the latter but I thought I'd make sure.

Cheers

Hello Gordonmull.

I don't think there is any point in trying to replant them at this stage of their life cycle. If suddenly it goes very wet (not currently forecast you'll probably increase the chance of them rotting.

Just my thoughts.

Cheers, Bluecar.

Oh, it's wet my way! Absolutely filthy day today.

My first taste of home grown onion, then. Woohoo!  :D

Hi G... The onions are at a time to stop growing now and the tops will fall over - possibly what yours have done... No chance of growing any more..  At the same time the root system also stops growing and can be pulled out very easily with probably only a third of the roots intact. I use this lesser root ball as an indication that they are ready to pull out. If the weather is suitable and dry you can leave them in the bed pulled out to start to dry off then after a few days I place them on a table in my greenhouse for a few weeks to dry off.. Then store in the shed in open woven bags.. Sometimes I forget and leave them in the GH for months then when i'm tired of going into the cold to get them for using I move them into my garage!!  Keep checking them during storage and throw away any rotting ones..
