Does anyone know if soot can be used on the compost heap or mixed in the garden soil generally ?

Soot is great if you store it for a few months first,i always put some in the trench before my manure where i am planting my spuds,Ive never had any trouble with holes in the spuds from eelworm or slugs, a old gardener told me to use it and he had been doing it on his plot for 60 years,he was 86 years old when he gave up his plot next to me.
