Crash

Hi this is my first post. I'm moving house in the next few weeks and just down the road is an allotment. I've got as far as registering my interest with Ipswich Borough council. I was wondering how much I'll be expected to pay?
Look forward to your replies.

Whats the average price you pay? I'm only in the planning stage at the moment. BTW the last time I grew anything was in the first year of high school in the gardening club! I'll be on here harassing you lot if I'm lucky enough to get a "Lottie"

Hi Crash.

I live in Ipswich and have 2 allotments. They cost me about £10 per year, including water. There is a small fee for joining the association too.

Where abouts in Ipswich are you moving too? You never know, we might end up on the same site!

Crash

we are moving to Trafalgar Close just up the hill from the 2 Spring Road sites. Do you know if there's a waiting list for plots?

nikkrud

What a coincidence! My 2 plots are on one of the Spring road sites, Field 17.

As far as I am aware we are now full, but people are giving up all the time, and it is well worth going on the waiting list as we will contact you the minute one comes up for rent.

I'm not sure about the other side of the road though, you would need to contact the field secretary. Her number should be on a board just inside the gate (visible from outside), or the Council will send it to you with a list of the field secretary's names.

All you need to do then is give them a call, and see if there is anything going.

Good Luck.

Crash

I'll pop down and have a look tomorrow. Thanks for the info. We might have to swap tips over a pint at the Fat Cat.

nikkrud

lol!

That sounds like a great idea to me!  ;) ;D

Moggle

Welcome Crash and good luck getting a plot  :)

Just for info, I pay £9 a year. (Haven't paid yet, took the plot on last nov, and I'm still clearing it)
Lottie-less until I can afford a house with it's own garden.

Crash

Nikkrud. Could you tell me how long you had to wait for your plots? IS there a long waiting list?

philcooper

Crash,

Welcome aboard, at around £10 that sounds quite cheap compared with other councils

Phil

Derek

That certainly is cheap

Our gardening year commences on the 29th September of each year.

I have two half plots (different sizes apparently)

1. 227 Sq.Yds @ 8.00p per sq yds  (less Senior citizen allowance)  I pay £13. 62p

2. 236 Sq. Yds @8.00 per sq.yd (less discount)  £14. 16p

That price includes water...we are, apparently, the dearest Borough in the County

We have been informed that it is going to be increased to 10.00p per sq yd from September 2005

Derek... South Leicestershire

I am in my own little world, ...it's OK, ...they know me there!

NattyEm

We have ahalf plot 110sq yds or something there abouts £20 a year (though the first year is free as it needs clearing) includes water more expensive than yours Derek  :(

Hi Crash!  I was brought up in Ipswich but now live in Weymouth, hope you like it there!

nikkrud

I got my allotments 3/4 years ago, and I didnt have to wait at all.

I know that on my side of the road, there is a short waiting list maybe 2 or 3 names, but I dont know about the other side as they are under a different secretary. My best advice would be to call the field secretary's and let them know that you are interested, and they will let you know how many are on the waiting list, and approx. how long you can expect to wait.

(I should probably have mentioned that I have a student allowance on the rate that I pay, so would be a little more.)

Hi all, just took my allotment on 3 weeks ago in sleepy Somerset. Total cost for 5 perches is £6, water and manure 3 times a year included. Only had to wait a week for the first offer of a plot, ended up waiting 3 months for a plot nearer to home. :)

blimey - manure included? We have to pay £25 a load!!! (And my last lot is going for world record bindweed infestation)

I pay £1.85 a pole/perch/rod on a very sloping site in flinty alkaline soil. Across the town, the flatter site (in more fertile soil as it's nearer river level) is £2.90 a pole. I've got the standard 10 pole plot now (in two halves). I would recommend starting with a half to see how it goes, then getting a second half once you're used to it!

Blinkin' flip!   :o

I paid something like 28 quid for mine, which does include cost of my keys and association membership.  Compared with everyone else I feel diddled!

Still reckon it's a bargain though - I could easily spend that on a night out which would only last a few hours and could lead to a sore head.  Instead I have months of pleasure and achey back, legs, arms...  :P

newchangeling - do you get discounted seeds through the association etc. could that be why your cost is higher than the others?
i pay approx £12 but no association/membership
