Sold for a farthing, by Clare Kipps, foreward by Julian Huxley. Anyone that is interested in birds would love this book.  I read it as a child, and recently bought in on ebay.  It is a story about a sparrow, a recorded biograpy of a common sparrow from cradle to grave. Kept it alive from less than a day old until maturity. The book is a bit old, but the first person that would like to read it, and love as much I did it, will post it you, free, if you give me your address by email obviously, just want someone else that loves birds to enjoy it as much as I did, honestly it is a little gem.

It arrived today and will sit in a comfy chair tomorrow to read and pass on, thank you Borlotti.

A sad evening in the garden, the blackbirds were complaining about the crows, then I heard the owls, in daylight too, going in to feed their young. Way of the bird world  :(

btw Ninny - you sure it was crows the blackbirds were complaining about, not rooks?

Just that I remembered the saying I learned when I lived in Deepest Glos - if you see a lot of crows them be rooks, if you see a solitary rook, that's a crow.... ::) :)

Now that's an interesting saying and I'll remember it, thank you, Lishka. By the size I would say a crow was on the hunt, but they could have spread out around the copse (if they were rooks) as the blackbirds were complaining all along the gardens.
