Last autumn we planted some raspberry canes.

They have sat there doing a good impression of sticks ever since.

A week or so ago noticed this growth near the base of a cane;

Could that be actual raspberry growth?

Certainly looks like it. Seems like they have given the main cane a miss but developed suckers from the roots. Others might appear as time goes on.
My raspberries are quite frightening: they are now as tall as me and are totally feral, although laden with tiny green fruit. Next year I must be ruthless and actually dig out a few as they are just too vigourous, they are harming surrounding plants.
They are the huge clump you can see behind the potatoes:
2012 - Snow in February, non-stop rain till July. Blight and rot are rife. Thieving voles cause strife. But first runner beans and lots of greens. Follow an English allotment in urban France: http://roos-and-camembert.blogspot.com

They are meant to grow from the roots, with the first shoots appearing an inch or so from the case, I assume the stick to the top right of the shoot is the cane, in which case all is well.
If there's nothing wrong with me, maybe there's something wrong with the universe!
