asparagus peas info

hello all,, trying asparagus peas this year for first time , silly question but do i treat them as a normal pea crop , and are they really worth growing as i have heard some very mixed reactions towards them ?.... as usual any advice would be very much appreciated  thanks ....n8r.... ;) ;D

Worth growing... as an ornamental... lovely flowers, nice structure... front of border. Worth eating... not in my opinion..  :-X

I think eating the cardboard from the cornflakes is a lot less trouble.  Pretty flowers though.  I grew them once too.

You say you've heard mixed reactions about them....I'd love to know who on earth had anything good to say about them as a veg....best I can offer is, they are very easy.
We're not very encouraging, are we!

I've got a tray of AP seedlings that are doing well. Thought they sounded nice but judging by this I guess not.

Of those who have eaten then - how big were the pod you picked apparently your supposed to eat them when they are just under an inch long?

hmmm OK then maybe ill grow them up the shed, if the pods are as unappetizing as they sound they will still look good lol .surely its all a matter of personal taste thanks for the erm advice lol  ;) ;D

Pick the pods when very small and cook them briefly.  Once they start to get longer than an inch they get tough and taste like grass.  Pretty flowers, the bees loved them.  They germinate easily, I didn't provide any support as they are only short little plants.  I am sure they are lovely smothered in butter or gravy.......

A bit of info....

It does not belong to the pea family or the aparagus family, It's name comes from the pea like flowers and the taste which is similar to asparagus.

They are very faffy which is why they are not a popular veggie even when harvested and cooked right.

Pick them at LESS than an inch long or they will be very tough and tasteless, hence the reputation. Even at an inch long they are going over.

The plants only grow to about 10 inches tall and do look very pretty but you have to be vigilant to get an edible harvest.

Best used in stirfires where they do OK.


I hope this helps, I would't grow them again as I said they are faffy and they go past their best very quickly.
