Lovely, I love mushrooms. Can you do an idiot's guide to growing them, please  :)

goodlife

Sorry...nope..they can be bit tricky..but it all depends of the variety you want to grow. Funnily enough, these button type..the most common in shops are not the easiest to grow..that's why I'm so chuffed that I've managed to grow them.
Some other varieties, like oyster mushrooms are much more easier.
I can post link here for the on line book that will tell you how to prepare beddings etc.
I'll be back with that...

The oyster ones are my favourites!

I've been trying master the preparation in small scale. All the info on net is for the compost bin size production..and that's bit too much.
Its proven to be quite fiddly job to prepare..but I seem to get there.

Is this a mushroom kit, or have you made it from scratch? I've bought the boxes a couple of times and they do well so long as they don't get too wet/dry or overheat, but i never really feel like I'm getting value for money. If I pay £5-6 for a box I want quite a lot of mushrooms to break even.
Last year I took all the straw that I used around my strawberries and have gradually added it into the top of one of those Dalek-shaped compost bins, then finally inoculated it using a mini mushroom box from poundland. No mushrooms yet, but I feel confident that there will be something soon. Rather, I hope there will be.

Sorry winecap..I only just noticed you reply.
This one is one that I MADE 'earlier'.. ;D..re-using old kit container.
Next lot I've got bigger containers and I suspect those will be easier to keep in even moisture than these tiny ones.
I doubt you ever make a 'profit' with bought mushroom kits..they are priced to their absolute maximum. If you break to even..that's well done.
Once my next 'bedding' mixture is ready for inoculation, I'll be hiding my 'kits' under the bed.. ;D ;D..nice and cosy and just perfect temperature for it. There is hot water pipes going under the floor to the radiator so bit of gentle warmth will do good. I just have to change bedding so there is long frilly edge hanging over the bed...stops OH from seing what's hiding behind the 'curtain'.. ;D ;D He might have fit other wise.. :-X
Once the bedding is ready for the peat covering then I more the containers into almost un-heated room for the fruiting... ;D..that's safe zone (from OH) as I've got propagator and lights set up there for winter anyway.
I'm sure I'm not only one bonkers here..growing 'stuff' indoors.. ;D ;D
