I have just finished putting up my 20ft polytunnel and wondered what to grow in it over summer so far they is going to be Tomatoes  Cucumbers Melons Peppers. What else could be grown in there?

We have very early spuds in , lots of salads. We will be growing toms, cucs, melons and peppersalong with chillies, sweet potatoes and dwarf french beans. The sweetcorn will be in half of the long bed 15' , hope this gives you some ideas  :toothy10:

Melons will do much better inside where they is more heat the ones I will be growing this year will  be Prescott fond blanc a French variety and they defiantly need to be inside.

For the spring/summer I'm hoping to grow pretty much as already mentioned; peas, beans, potatoes, tomatoes, sweet peppers, chillies, aubergine, possibly an early corn, sweet potatoes, yacon and a few oca in amongst the tomatoes. A few sweet peas as they do so well inside. The juggle is waiting for crops to be ready for harvest so the next crop can go in. Although a bit more time consuming, I start more veggies in trays and pots so they can just be transplanted into an available spot.

I agree with Steveg1966, melons would be best inside a polytunnel or greenhouse in the UK. Although it might be worth trying a couple in a coldframe or similar. I had ok results growing some a in home-made temporary polytunnel last year, a bit slow ripening but it was a grotty summer!

Hi_Hoe

Tomms/ Pepps/ /cucs all do well in the tunnel, but you can put whatever you want in really so long as its well ventilated in summer and each crop gets its fill of water!! :sunny:

I grew Carlingford potatoes for christmas and they didny doo too bad (planted september), and i have red cabbage in there at mo. Also, i have garlic which has grown from seed fallen from last years scapes! Just shows you dunnit?!

Tunnels offer an extended - if not year round when planned- season which is a real boon to the average allotmentist. Previous years i have set off seeds in one of those 4 tier jobbies actually inside the tunnel earlydoors (jan feb) and had great success - a greenhouse within a greenhouse- foolpoof!! :tongue3:

The best thing about tunnels tho has got to be the smell of those tommies and chillies that hits you when u open the door in the height of summer!!! :sunny: :sunny: :sunny: :toothy10:

Best o luck with ya new tunnel,  steveg1966
If tha does nowt, tha gets nowt. Simple!
