I hope the military wives get to number one this Xmas. They are the unsung heroes fof the armed forces and deal with all the cr@p.

Ok im biased but I was one.

I mean who else could have a car accident and be asked by a MOD plod, what rank you are, and when you say wife, be told the accident is your fault based on rank!
Yes that truely happened to me, they really are treated as the lowest of the low, but have to deal with husbands being away for months on end and being mummy and daddy to their kids.

OK soap box over crawling away ;......................  :)

If you'd seen the series you may have felt differently Ceres.  We know it's for the telly, we know Gareth is gorgeous but he has worked in some very deprived areas starting these choirs and getting ordinary folks to find a quality in themselves they never knew they had, to watch them grow in confidence and as human beings has been touching. He has  a special gift, and with luck the enthusiasm he generates will have spin-offs in other places.

I don't doubt that it's all very worthy but that doesn't necessarily make it good music.  i'm sure it will sell and lots of people will find it in their Christmas stocking but in five years time it will be hanging on string scaring birds on allotments.

Read rest of the thread Ceres and my musical qualities will become apparent to you ;)
When Mr PKL out I put the You-tube link on at the top of the page and sing my little tuneless heart out ;D ;D ;D
As for the bird scarers I find that CD's wear through whatever you use to hang them up with, so have you found a good way of hanging them?

ceres

Ah, we're all virtuoso singers in the privacy of our own showers!  ;)

The way I do it is to put a length of plastic-covered garden wire through the CD and twist the ends on the edge of the CD and then form a loop with the ends.  Polypropylene string through the loop, Bob's yer auntie.  Will still wear eventually as all string does but stops the sawing action of the edge of the CD.

I hadn't heard this choir thing until they were on Strictly at the weekend.  I'm sorry, but I thought it was awful.  I don't know if it was because they were live but they were flat, out of time and the song is complete schmalz.  It's everything that's bad about records made especially for Christmas.

If you had watched the series you would have had some understanding of what you are talking about.

ceres

Watching the series wouldn't make flat in tune or out of time in time.  Music is music, it's not reality TV.

betula

You still do not appear to get it Ceres.

The lyrics were written especially for these women. The lines were taken from letters these women had exchanged with their husbands while away on active service. They have deep significance to them .

Gareth was giving the women a voice to say what they feel in their hearts.

Not schmaltz,just love,worry ,longing.............

The recorded version is sung very well..........

Catch the series on i player,I don't think you will regret it.

I caught it on strictly and thought it sounded terrible as well..
I guess it's just not my cup of tea in any event...
Moved to Portugal - ain't going back!

I watched the series, and all the others that Gareth did and I love this song.  I would love to be able to sing - I wonder if Gareth has ever thought of having an allotment choir? ;)

But we are all in that boat, all we need is Gareth ;D
That's the whole point- he finds what we do not know is there and gets the best out of people.

shirlton

Just dont have choir practice on yer plot Betty ;D. Mind you the cats could help yer out ;D
When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"

Squash64

The cats would sound a million times better than me, Shirl!
