apple and pear tree

I'm looking to plant 1 apple & 1 pear tree in a small garden, has anyone got any thoughts of which type to plant, must be English varieties up to 10ft high

Must it be one of each? Two apples would be my choice... more reliable cropping here... and two will allow better fertilisation...
Discovery/Fiesta works well for me... apples from the end of August to December...  :)
