d**n Leeks

  Hello , leeks well In my case lack of them. apart from 1 or 2 , the rest have very little white stalk, is that because i planted to shallow?
        Advise please so i dont make the same mistake next year , lol

We dib a hole and drop the leek in so's just the tip shows, as they grow, I earth them up a bit. that works for us  :)

There has been many discussions over generations wether to trim roots and tops but this has been lost and forgotten as it doesn't make any difference. Water them in which will get enough soil around the roots to grow. The normal rainfall and natural growth of the leek will slowly fill the hole. earth up in winter to protect them a bit from the cold. Simples!!

Good advice to follow but bear in mind that this is done much earlier in the year. May June?

You won't go far wrong if you follow that excellent advice.  :) Re trimming the roots - there's one advantage to doing that - trimmed leeks drop straight down the dibbed holes much easier than untrimmed ones.

You can earth them up too, like potatoes, the white part of the stalk is blanched by being in the ground. (note to self to do that this weekend!)

Listen to Grandma.... trimming the roots does makes sense for this reason.

I never trim the roots or earth up around leeks.  They are puddled in a hole that has been made with a dibber then left to fend for themselves until harvested with the occasional weeding when needed

A lot depends on the size of the leeks when you plant them out. Mine are usually small enough to drop straight into the holes, in which case there's no point trimming them. If they don't go, they need trimming.
