we had a blight warning 2 days ago and i've just been down the allotment and a few of the leaves on my potatoes are going brown, does this look like blight, it's only on a few leaves stems look ok.

Looks like early blight to me.

i've never seen blight before what should i do now , do i have to cut the tops off and lift the potatoes.

If you don't have too many potatoes, you can pull the infected leaves off and keep them going for a while. Cut the tops off when it gets too bad.

ok thanks, i will do that and keep a close eye on them  :)

You should cut all the foliage off but need not dig the potatoes until you want to. If the foliage is left on the rain will wash the blight spores down into the ground and onto your crop but if foliage is removed the potatoes should be alright. I have been down to my plot this morning and cut all my foliage off. One plot holder had it start a week or so ago but has done nothing so now we are all getting infected. >:( >:(

Early blight does not tend to kill the plant.  As others have said just pull off the leaves, do not put them in your compost bin or leave them lieing about.

The devasting type of blight also goes for the stems and within a couple of days the plant is very obviously dieing big time.
