I am doing an experiment this year. I plan to grow my tomatoes and peppers outdoors but inside a Wall o Water. I have sown my tomato seeds and pepper seeds into home made modules (any excuse to be green and recycle old newspaper). See picture below.  The white perlite on top is to stop any mould growing and to prevent damping off. Tomato varieties are: St Pierre, Golden Sunrise and Outdoor Girl. Peppers are Capsicum Toreado. The tomatoes are outdoor varieties but I hope the Wall o Water will give me the extra warmth I need for early fruiting and longer harvesting. I spent my afternoon setting up the WalloWater so they can start warming the soil. By the time my peppers and toms are seedlings the climate inside the wow should be nice and cosy. Here are some pictures.

I've never seen a Wall-o-Water, but I can see how it might work. Bit difficult to see the scale, how big is it?

I look forward to your report on how your plants do later this year!

It's about 2ft high. The idea is that you put the seedling (when about 15cm tall) inside the Wall-o-Water, the top closes like a teepee to give added protection. When the plant grows bigger then the top, when you fill if up further with water, stays open and the plant grows out the top. If you don't fill it with more water the plant will simply push the top open and grow out. Have a look at www.wallowater.comif you want to find out more about how it works.

look forward to the results of your experiment, Jesseveve, it looks a very interesting idea.
interesting link too, so are you going to use it for more than toms-winter salads or such?
are you going to measure the temp inside and outside to see what the difference is? it's a bit weird to think that if there is a frost and the water freezes then the plant inside wil be keep cosy! let us know if you get an earlier harvest.

see, i'm all intrigued now................

I'll let you know how things go Kerry and I'll post some photos as the season progresses. If it works then I shall try the winter veg as well, may as well make use of them all year round.
