Hi guys :D
i have been asked to do some research for a kids page for my associations website. we have only been up and running on the net for a year and we have loads of kiddies that are members of the association through their parents and they are so enthuastic, they enter the fete competitions with the stuff they have grown and are all great!
i know i have two children but i know also that you are all a wealth of knowledge and ideas! (Grovel grovel!!! ;))
i was thinking along the lines of little quizzes, pictures to print and colour, crosswords, mini gardening projects.........uuummmmmmmm????????
can anyone help?

Maybe some recipes to use their home grown ingredients. Things like strawberries dipped in chocolate, blueberry/blackcurrant muffins, smoothies, fruit salads etc.

Seasonal activities are always good. Making valentines cards, egg painting, pancake recipes. Perhaps suggest different arty methods like potato stamping to create greeting cards. Pressed flower pictures/cards.

Make a scarecrow for the allotment.

Go on a bug hunt. Provide a pictoral list of all the common insects. The children print off the list and tick off each picture as they find the insect.

Tallest sunflower competition and biggest/heaviest pumpking competition.

Make and grow your own seed head. Use old stockings, potting soil and grass seed.

In autumn my children love going for a long walk with me and finding all sorts of seeds and dried pods. Like conkers (including the outer shells), chestnuts, acorns, pretty leaves, seeds pods etc. We put them in a large bowl with a few drops of aromatherapy oils to make a seasonal pot pourri.

Make a birdbath from teracotta pots and watch the birds enjoy a bath. (upturn two large teracotta pots and stack one on top of the other, put a large teracotta pot saucer on top and fill with water).

Get parents to help children make nest boxes. http://www.rspb.org.uk/gardens/whatyoucando/nestboxsmallbird/make_a_nestbox.asp

I'm sure there's lots of other activities.

There was an article in kitchen garden mag a while back - making paper from veggie peelings (and other plant material) - always fancied a go at that!

Multiveg

It is a reasonable mag for concentrating on veggie stuff, though I won;t be renewing my subscription just yet - things seem to get repeated - the advice for growing this veg and that aren't going to change too much from year to year. Probably worth subscribing for a year or two. I probably will renew organic gardening subscription in October though.

I'll see if I can dig out the issue with the paper in & photocopy it for you (pm me with your address)  ;D
