Garlic Sprouting Already!

Hi,
I planted some garlic (Thermidrome, Elephant and some donated) in October and November. They are sprouting already and in fact started sprouting in December (I spread some mulch on them that time).  Is this a bad thing? Will they be decimated by the next hard frost  ???
Hope you can advise me, I'm new to Garlic growing (but not eating!)

No, they will be fine, I have garlic up to about 6 or 8 inches high and they have been frosted more than once, seem to be tough as old boots.

Mine are up and looking sturdy also, much earlier than last year also.  They will be fine and as soon as the weather starts to warm they will really start to grow!  ;D

I brought the starter pack of garlic from the garlic farm on the isle of wight planted in late November and everything except the solvent wight is sprouting. Does anyone know why this would be please?

mm - I planted mine (an early variety and a late one) in November. The early sprouted within a couple of weeks; the late is only just coming up. I think Solent Wight is a late. In fact I think it's the late I've got.

Early garlic sprouts earlier than late, for reasons I've forgotten.

shug - dont be worried about a frost either, thats what they need to force them into cloves. planted mine also in late oct and 6 inches high now :)

Yep mine are about 6 inches high too - planted in October but can't remember the type.  I'm really chuffed with it as it's my first time with garlic and my first crop planted in my plot. got in in the summer and have been dig, dig, digging ever since so it's great to actually see something growing!!!
Overwintering onion sets palnted about the same time are also doing well

Thanks everyone, that's good to know! Mine are about 3 or 4 inches tall now.

Plottie - Just got my allotment this year too, been digging and scrounging wood for raised beds all year. Got onion sets, Japanese overwintering onions sown in August and Spring cabbage growing. It's great to see something green other than weeds! I didn't realise just how BIG a dandilion could grow  :o
