Hello all

I live in Rutland and don't have an allotment yet, but from what I've heard there's plenty available in the area(which, from reading a few messages on this site, seems pretty rare!)

I've had quite a bit of trouble finding out how to rent an allotment (which is probably why there are so many available!) but I've tracked down the right person, and I'm hoping to get an allotment in the next few weeks.

Anyone got any advice/handy tips for starting an allotment for the first time? Any do's or don'ts?

All information appreciated!

Many thanks,
Claire

Well, I'm far from an experienced professional having only started this year (and there's lots of painful learning by experience going on... :() but the BEST thing I was told was to clear a small patch that you can start growing things on straight away so that while you're doing all the back-breaking digging for the rest, there are some plants growing to cheer you up. A bit trickier I guess at this time of year but it really helps!

Also try to pick a plot close to water supply, and a shed is not only good for storing tools but also makes a good refuge from rain.
