I have just completed a taste test on three types of Mangetout and Sugar Snap peas.
The easy winner was the tall ( 2.5m ) Sugar Lord sugar snap type pea, with very thick and succulent pods which were the sweetest of all.
Unbelievably, it is not available now. I think  that tall peas are now out of fashion.
Second was Oregon Giant Mangetout and Carouby de Mousane mangetout third.

Realfood,

Thank you for that taste test.  Just one question, where did you get the seeds for Sugar Lord?  You say they are not available any more, and that such a lovely sounding tall pea should be more widely known about.

Tall peas are so much easier to handle and protect from mice, I just prefer them by a long way.

I have googled for Sugar Lord without success and would appreciate any information on how to find a few seeds.  I would gladly swap you some for something you might like.  My favourite snap peas are Amish Snap.

Marshalls used to have them. When I contacted them they still had some left but they were not in their catalogue. If there are none left, I can do a swap with you for next year.

Realfood,

you were right, this one is unavailable commercially.  Marshalls replied promptly and said: 'We no longer have Sugar Lord in stock, I don't believe we will be offering this variety again.'

Too bad.  Yes I'd like to swap seeds if you have plenty, but don't leave yourself short.  Your second favourite was 'Oregon Giant' and I was lucky to get seeds very recently.  I am looking forward to growing them next year.

I grew Sugar Lord a few years ago. They were lovely. Everything I've tried since just hasn't been as good. I'd love to get hold of some again. I wished I'd saved some seed. I've been looking for a month now. Does anyone have any that they could swap/sell?

Cheers,

Adam
