Lancashire Lad - or is it?

The Heritage Seed Library newsletter has just dropped on the doormat. 

Apparently the original 'Lancashire Lad' pea is green podded, unlike the purple podded variety in circulation, including being swapped by members here.

HSL is trying to find seed of the original Lancashire Lad to set the record straight.  They are withdrawing the purple variety from their listing.

What we know as Lancashire Lad is a nice pea and definitely worth saving for future generations.  This leaves us with a labelling problem now.  I propose a descriptive name, such as 'Purple podded, tall growing pea formerly known as Lancashire Lad'.  What a mouthful!

What other suggestions are there for a new working name for our seed swaps?

It's a good pea, and well worth preserving, but these old field peas have long lost their original names, if indeed they ever had them. We'll have to make one up. What about Lancashire Lass?

I had been wondering why it was the only purple-podded pea I've come across with what sounded like a 'proper' name!

"Purple Thingy" ?.... still wouldn't be the dodgiest name for a veg, I'm growing a tomato called "Black Seaman"....

I guess I'm going to think of it as purple Lancashire Lad, love the Lass bit  ;D
Its certainly worth growing whatever its name but I agree it might become a tad confusing if a load of new names spring up.
