later sprouts further on

I planted out some sprouts from a seedbed, leaving some smaller ones in the seed bed to grow on a bit, planting them a week or so later.  Now these later planted ones have really taken over the others and are developing the little buds which will become sprouts.  They're also a lot larger.  Were the first lot checked by cold or is there another reson? Please!
