Thanks for asking this question - I was about to do the same!!  A flipping badger has been digging all the carrots up throughout the allotment!  Only carrots!!!

Poor thing must be starving as he/she couldn't get any earthworms!

I will be planting some - probably tonite!

I will be sowing Carrot Resistafly this weekend for a Christmas crop.
Did the same last year and had carrots on Christmas day but found it hard to get them out of the ground

T&M do a variety that you only sow in Autumn called Nantes Frubund that should be ready in Spring, you could also try a round quick growing carrot like Parmex.

I read somewhere that you could still sow carrots now for a crop in 6 weeks' time. I was thinking if trying it. Is that going to work?

Always use whatever I have, I find it doesn't seem to matter much although to go right through a cold winter I agree Autumn King is a good choice.

I am planting one this week that is new to me.I put some in the swap parcel I think.

Snowhite, it grows in hard ground, will take poor conditions and holds well thru winter I picture it as another root for winter. West Coast Seeds say it is not a carrot for fresh eating and comes into it's own is stews

Another one I ineneded to plant and for get ot buy is Napoli,comes highly rated from Elliot Coleman is his 4 season harvest book , he calls it winter candy.

Anyway whatever ,I am planting a selection today in the ground and some in pots on the balcony.

When you plant chives, make sure they're near your carrots if you have a vegetable garden, and any apple trees you may have on your property.

I've got the flipping badger problem too!  They started a few weeks ago on my new potatoes, then newly planted squashes (presumably because I was watering them copiously) and then yesterday they'd dug up nearly all of my drought impoverished carrots.

If it's carrots for storage, this one from realseeds is great - the bit about it getting sweeter after lifting is true.  But I haven't tried growing them late before - some sown last week, we'll see.

Here's a medium long orange carrot with rounded tips. We like the flesh which is particularly tasty and sweet, and gets sweeter after lifting.

It is a late-season carrot, best planted for a maincrop, and we chose it for its very long-keeping qualities once harvested.

We usually sow several rows of Autumn King over the next few weeeks... as we lift the early spuds... get a good crop from October half term onwards..  :)

Oh well I gave it a go -  I don't even know what they were - someone gave them to me, but I wil be happy if I get some carrots out of it!

Sorry to hear about so many badger problems (earlypea and oldbird). Next door plot has a big set in it (or is it a sett?) so it's possible I will also lose my carrots too.
