Hi all - my spinach is around 8 - 10 inch high with good leaves - when should i harvest it and do i pull the whole root or just snip the leaves as i'm not sure if it's one of those that you get a second crop from.

Great Site, Very Helpful People.

Thanks in Advance

If its perpetual spinach you have you can snip off the leaves and let it grow more leaves for use later on.
If you are not sure what you have snip the leaves anyway and see what happens.
Dont cut them off too close to the ground though. :)

Perpetual spinach (the answer is in the name) is one of the things I can grow, cut and come again spinach.  It is very good to eat and am sure it is good for you, may take a few minutes longer to cook than baby spinach, but you get more for your money, or seed packet. I haven't frozen any, but someone will know, would rather eat it fresh.

It freezes fine but "goes off"  abit after about three months...

Thanks all - appreciated - Saddad - are you on the Littleover Lane site by any chance?

thanks

I've grown it successfully for four years now (two sowings), cut and come again, freezes (after wilting in pan), use it in quiches, but this year has bolted twice due to drought conditions and now on compost heap. Will sow again for a crop this year and hopefully next.

Cheers Mike j - am i ight on this -  i just toss it under some water in a collander and wilt it in just what remains on the leaves before freezing?

thanks again

Drop in boiling water 30 seconds, cool in very cold water straight away, blot dry and freeze.
