Muck heap.... to sheet or not to sheet...

Ive had 8 tonnes (yes 8 tonnes!) delivered to my allotment, am having to barrow it over to my own part, am wondering weather once ive got it all moved (about 4 days at this rate) should i sheet the heap to stop it from drying out to much over the summer?

I'd say it would be wise to cover it, not just to stop it drying out if we have a scorcher, but also to stop nutrients being washed out if we don't.

And to stop the weeds from growing on it.

You could always cut some holes in the plastic and grow squashes.

8 tonnes of muck? - yup, (its) definitely sheet (spelling?).



If its being heaped up for storing and is fairly fresh, I'd also put it on a ground sheet to collect the runoff and to stop bindweed/couch etc thriving in it.

Its quite old actually , havent got any squashes left to plant, owt else i could plant in it?

Sheet the Sh$$....seriously it helps keep it moist ....cut slits in the sheet and plant away....anything that likes sh$$...that is,,, ;)

Local Builders yard..Viscene..Dpc....plastic sheeting used on concrete floors ect..
heavy duty stuff few bob a square meter....
Last year covered half an undug plot..weeds galore...dug it over come Feb..now planted out...now covering me muck heap....last for years.... ;)

yep, or courgettes, squash or cucumbers, provided it's warm enough to plant them out  ;D
