Three stone???????.........are you having a laugh?????......I can't be that much over weight!!!!

Well, apparently I am, according to the diabetes clinic.   It's what they've "suggested" I lose between now and Xmas.   And, get this, with a view to eventually getting down to around 10 stone.   So that means I must be at least fourteen stone in weight.   Problem is, I don't feel that overweight, nor do I think I look that overweight.

I use the cycle a lot and do the garden manually so can't understand where all this excess weight is supposedly hiding.

It'll make the rest of the year interesting, if nothing else.

Are you going to join a club, or struggle on your own?  I found that http://www.weightlossresources.co.uk was really excellent and I lost over 30 pounds.  Of course, I put it all back on again but that wasn't their fault. They do a free 24 hour trial too.  In fact, I think I will join again.

As muscle weighs more than fat does, you are probably very muscly ........

The problem with medical professionals is that  every day they see sick people and in the course of their work they strive to discover reasons and causes. This can only be done by studying sick people because perfectly healthy ones do not need to consult them and have no intention of going near a medical institution if it can be avoided.

Most sick people I know who go regularly to clinics for various things have found out the best course of action is to agree with everything 'they' tell them at the clinic for what ever, then continue to do what they feel happy doing.

Loosing a few pounds by Christmas (I suppose that is the next appointment you have) will cheer them up enormously.

Write down an idea menu plan for yourself for a week and take it with you next time you go, tell them that is what you have eaten every day and ask them to point out where you are going wrong (they like that sort of thing) It looks like you are co-operating.

Yes, the muscle vs fat can be a real spanner in the works to some.  Apparently my sister-IL went swimming most days to lose weight, but stopped when she developed muscle on her arms because it interfered with the weight loss, even though, in the grand scheme of things, she was probably doing pretty well.

However, what I would say is that, diabetes being what it is, and the various complications being what they are over the course of time, it's worth seeing what sort of an arrangement, for want of a better term, you can come to with your medics.  I guess the real question is whether you are actually overweight or whether it's a matter of degree.

Apologies for any blunt tone in this - it's unintended, but my mother was type 1 for 50 years.

Best regards,
Sue

Fortunately (for me anyway) I am currently type 2 and it got caught really early, purely by accident.   The support worker at the clinic who gave me the figures isn't my usual support worker and she just used the BMI charts.   My normal support worker is far more approachable and reasonable and uses some other variation of chart that take  into account build, based on the width of the bones at the elbow.   Whilst her charts also put me in the overweight bracket they are more forgiving.

Since being diagnosed I have kept a food diary.   Upon first diagnosis my support worker regularly used her red pen to circel (repeatedly) things like Coca Cola and chocolate.   The amount of red pen is now significantly reduced, but every so often it does get seized upon when she sees something she doesn't like.

I wouldn't say I'm going it alone as I do attend diabetes clinic regularly, subject to my shifts. and we have a "fat club" at work.  Also, I've made contact with my company's occupation health department who are also assisting me.   I've also discovered a surprising amount of similarly-afflicted within the company so am not short of support or advice.

Ohhhhhh...I should not put my reply on this on...it really gets me going...so called health professional.... >:( ::)
I'm diabetic too..now classed as 1&1/2,,yes not just 1 or 2 but I have both types...yes it is possible... ::)..and that's why I have been for year treated either for one or another...
I have just finished 4 weeks training in hospital for dealing with diabetes..if they would have put me through it year ago..as only now my control is getting into right track.. >:(
As for weight loss...well...I think that is what doctors recommend even they haven't actually looked at you..they just stare at the numbers on paper,
Every time I go for check up..this issue comes up..last time I finally lost my cool and actually back answered..I told the doctor to have a good look..asked if he wants me to strip off and see :o :o.. although I have some to loose around middle but basically I'm tall, mussly woman who does heavy physical work and without a bit of oomf...I cannot do gardening as a job and life style all year round + animals+house etc...all in same time, I just cannot...and dieting and going to gym. oh please...I have life to live..it is ok when you are in your 20's and you live just for yourself..and I told him that when talking to specialist nurses they think I'm fine..no problems.. ::) Beside no thanks to doctors they just add more tablets for my prescription and there is me wanting to come off them..they say it cannot be done and it is for life now.....well I proved them wrong..my medicine intake is halved and few more to get rid of...
often the the doctors need a bit of wake up call for the reality... ::)

BMI charts are the equivalent of just hitting everything with a hammer. A good starter but need to used in conjunction with other things, like common sense! If your normal health professional is more approachable and sensible then speak to them next time you see them. Setting you unattainable targets is just counter-productive.

I had similar worries with the midwife doing my BMI, but luckily she wasn't bothered. Have been working as a professional gardener for three years and during that time I have dropped between two and three dress sizes (depending on where you shop). Total weight loss according to the scales during that time is about 6lb. I'll admit to still carrying a little bit more around the middle than I should (excepting the bit with the babba in it!), but at least my husband doesn't try to arm wrestle me any more  ;D

I will give you three guesses where it is hiding, if it is anything like mine your never going to find it, I only found mine by accident, I faced the mirror, nothing!, I looked up and down - nothing, but, when I turned sideways and looked down there it was, it couldn't hide fast enough, I spotted it and it new it. Its really sneaky, and it knows I can only see it when I look behind and down !. I told it if it did not go away I would have it arrested for stalking me, but it merely laughs  ???
Ignore me I'm having a breakdown.
