sowed carrots a few weeks ago, poor germination. it is so cold are they not germinating because of cold weather  or am i being impatient? will repeat sow in a week. the seed was new so hopefully viable. plus went to lottie and tops of the potatoes were burnt by cold (think it was superficial damage)

The soil should be warm enough now for carrot germination..and yes..the should have germinated by now.
We have had quite dry weather resently..I've had to water mine every other day to get them going..they do like even moisture for good germination..
could anything ..bids..get to your seeds..did you net them over?

fi

didn't net them but i never do. i haven't been able to water every day so maybe its this but we have had rain every few days. will resow.

Carrots are notoriously difficult.... the seedlings are so small they get stuck under if the soil "caps"... our clay soil does so we cover the drills with a sand/compost mix. You also need to keep them damp... water in the drill before sowing, cover with compost water again... after firming in with back of rake so that seeds are in contact with wet soil... I find a layer of fleece helps keep the bed damp until they are through... max 2 weeks...  :-\

Only one person can grow carrots from direct sowing on our site.  Though I have had great success since sowing in buckets and containers of compost this past couple of years.

The first year I grew carrots I just broadcast seed on my clay soli and up the seedlings sprang. I have never had a sniff since, I have tried everything, I am almost at my wits end with carrots.

I have long since gone away from growing them directly into the ground not because of germination or even the carrot fly but because of what i could not get rid of that was already there. Now  i grow in a raised bed which gets sterilizes three times before planting and covered in fleece which helps raise the soil temperature. i also use any box i can find

i sowed 2 rows direct in bed and nothing has come up so decided to start some off in peat pots in greenhouse and within 1 week they are showing, when big enough i will cut bottom off pot and just plant the whole thing as the pots will rot  down
