I was spreading manure in the fruit cage today & I thought as we have a central pole doing nothing, well apart from supporting. Is there anything that could grow up a 5' 4" pole?

have you got any way of making the pole bigger? we have kiwi and passion fruit growing upwards in ours

Already have 40 poles for runner beans ;). No Manics it was built for little old me so I don't have to bend with my arthritic neck ;D. I wondered about the wine berry that was on GW last week but can't remember if it was a spreader.

grape vine...just for the fruit of course ;)

Edible things are very hard to suggest because they all seem to like to fan out, it is something that grows like a vine which will twirl round. Cucumber, grapes  and passion fruit, if they will survive out doors.

Ivy would look nicer than a bare pole and it grows quickly. when it gets to the top sweet peas grown round it which will cling to the ivy.

Kiwi also will grow in a spiral but I have yet to hear of any one getting any luck with them producing fruit in the UK.

There are some trailing plants which if planted at the top some how will grow down wards. I have heard of people growing tomatoes dangling from hanging baskets. Then you would need to stretch up to water them....Still not ideal.

If you do not mind it not looking pretty cut up some strong plastic bottles and attach them with nails and slip into each a potted strawberry plant.

That is my best effort at positive suggestions.

something like a honeysuckle or clemantis for the bees to help polinate your fruit, but it think they might need to be kept under control
