food etc from China

 Dare I even go there,,, but what is the reason for UK to import so much food from China, foods like fish, eggs, pork, chicken, apples the list goes on....
Don't you have local stuff any more. Or  should I just be quiet about it.....

Cos it's cheap, and most of the UK buys food that is cheap rather than food that is actually any good....

I have to admit to buying a packet of Goji berries.   After the whole business of the contaminated baby food I must say I would rather avoid foodstuffs from China.

I haven't knowingly bought any food from China - I always check the origin of everything I buy to make sure I don't buy from Israel.

I don't buy food produced in China either,  not so fond of Chinese food.   

BUT everything else seems to come from China and it will get worse.

In thew overall scheme of things uk food imports from china are relativley small. Maybe qahtan can explain what makes them think we get a lot of food from china?

 If in fact we do as has been suggested import lots from China, I would take a guess it is because Canada has a huge Oriental population, many street signs are in Chinese and Oriental supermarkets are everywhere.

We have been drinking China tea for a few centuries now.

There are Chinese restaurants all over and having been to the Supermarkets in China town in Manchester several times I can see that they are full of imported food stuff. Tinned, fresh, dried and frozen.

It used to come from Hong Kong and may well still come from Hong Kong which was a British Colony but is now China.

We had a big Chinese supermarket in Nottingham with a very extensive choice of imported Chinese labelled food also with carp swimming round in a tank, but no dogs running round, ;)

I am english, I eat chinese food from restaurants and takeaways.  There is a chinese supermarket near my parents and i pop in and buy some stuff I cannot get anywhere else (like dried soya milk sachets)

I buy local veg, meat, etc whenever I can, but I see nothing wrong with buying and eating Chinese; it is no different to me than all the stuff thats imported from the USofA, Brazil, etc...  If its grown in UK, then I'll try and buy UK, but if it aint...

isn't the Indian, the nations takeaway now???  (I also eat Indian Food)

apples? I'm not sure I've ever seen other things mentioned on that list, but was particularly puzzled by this. Can someone tell me please, which apples am I likely to buy which have come from China? Genuine request, btw, not a wind up.

It's mostly down to the Supermarkets, they buy as cheaply as possible, pay late and sell for as much as possible.

I buy from a British and a German supermarket, the British supermarket sells 12 large eggs for 19.58p each. The German supermarket sells Big British eggs at 9.9p each. You can guess which I buy.
