Hi! I hope somebody might be able to reassure me. Just
about to sow tomato seeds - but is it too late???  I've never sowed them after about mid-March before, but circumstances have meant  that I've not been able to get round to it yet..... Has anybody else ever sown them this late?

Fantastic! Thanks for your answers - made me feel a lot better. Will get on with sowing today and keep my fingers crossed!  :)

From experience, I find that my birthday April 21st is the perfect day for sowing tomatoes!
This is for ones that are going to be planted outdoors. If I sow them any earlier they get too tall and leggy before it's warm enough for them to go outside.

I normally sow the outdoor ones on our wedding anniversary - April 2nd. As that was Good Friday this year and I was away, I didn't sow till the 5th. But  - like the others - I've sown them later than that and still had good crops. (This season is three weeks late anyway!)

Really grateful for all your responses. Handy having a birthday to remember it by! I always mean to write the date down (when I sow things) but never remember to do it!!
I feel much more confident after reading all your replies - will go outside now and get on with it   :)

Mine never get set before the the second week of this month....then by the time they are ready for the greenhouse,I dont need any heat in there.

I haven't sowed mine yet (bar a few early mini plants)

I'm still sowing, the weather is still cool, plenty of time for things to catch up.

I'm afraid I treat them mean. I start the seed off in the warmth of the house house but they go into the cold greenhouse by mid March and they just have to take their chances. They may not grow very fast but they never go leggy. I lose very few to the cold and they grow into good sturdy plants. Different types take more or less time to come to maturity but I would have thought sowing any time until the end of this month would guarentee a  crop.
