Many thanks for that link Robert, exceedingly helpful for the seed hoarders amongst us!  :)

That was quite interesting! and in particular 'Parsnips' it goes against all I have been taught about them.

That is! consensus says; renew every year whereas this chart says 2-4 years!

What the chart doesn't give is 'viability'at the end of the extreme figure! I guess this comes down 'storage methods'

Which fetches me back to Parsnips viablity of even new seeds of these is not as high as some seed so this might be the main reason for renewing them annually.

But as I said it made for some interesting reading!

Yeah Tee Gee i noticed that and was surprised, same with carrots

I agree with you Tee Gee, I found it a little different to my experiences too.  XX Jeannine

What a fascinating site for those of us with a historical bent, thank you!  I think he's wrong about parsnips, though :(.

You couldn't make it up!

I'm surprised by the longevity of parnsips and carrots too.  I suppose like you suggest the percentage must drop off.

But I've been testing those and my hamburg parsley in the airing cupboard for germination and I'm surprised at the success rate.  Parsley bought last year (realseeds) still has about 90% success rate, some carrots still sealed but bought two years ago (Kings) 95% ish and last year's parsnips (realseeds) still 50%.

another vote for renewing parsnips annually!
