Cabbage Recommendations please

Having never grown cabbage before I'd appreciate some advice please.

Firstly, the variety, I like the tight white sort that I grate and eat raw in salads.

Secondly, when do I plant them?

Finally, what growing conditions do they particularly thrive on?

I'm not a great cabbage lover I tend to only grow winter varieties.

I see no point in using up valuable space on the plot growing cabbage during the summer when I can grow the more expensive stuff such as; calabrese & cauli in their place!

we use red cap and kalibos raw in salads, both red, I'm afraid  ;D
