Hi everyone, was just going through a swap packet and was wondering if the tomato growers around us could help me with some specifics of some tomatoes.

my google searches aren't very conclusive.

the varieties are:

  • Mobile
  • Gigante Liscio

  • Clear Pink Early

what i would like to know is;

1. are they outdoor/ green house toms?
2. are they bush/ cordon types?
3. and are they salad, cherry, plum or beefsteak, etc.

blue lettering on a blue background? don't work for me!!
what's wrong with black lettering??
You couldn't make it up!

Borlotti

Specsavers do a good deal.  One old biddy read it OK.

For the second two varieties, simply google with the word 'Tomato' in front.

Mobile thinks it's a phone,  any idea of the providing seed merchant?

The person who put them into the swap may be able to shed some light on it.  'Twasn't me, promise  ;) ;)

i have already did what you suggested and the only clear info i got is that Gigante is vining, so i should be able to grow as a cordon. whether it would be happy outdoors is still a mystery :-\.

the seeds are saved seeds i think so not in their original packets.

all tomatoes can be grown outside. that is  if you can't grow tomatoes outside in the first place.
Clear Pink Early
67 days, 4' compact indet., regular leaf, glossy light pink round fruits, 3-9 oz, very good flavor, high yield.

Gigante Liscio
Indeterminate  Red Open-pollinated Late (more than 80 days) Large (over one pound) fruit shape :Beefsteak  indeterminate

Gigante Liscio

Cordon,salad/beefsteak-as to growing outside- much depends on location and the season

Two of your tomatoes I have so can help.

Clear Pink Early is a determinate plant (bush)Sweet and quite tangy good round shape use in salads quite pink, skin is a wee bit thin.Early to mid season so should be fine outside.

The Gigante Liscio is an old Italian  beefsteak heirloom with a super taste,it is red . It is indeterminate(vine) Can grow to 2 lbs or  more  but it is a very late maturer so I would try that one in the greenhouse as it might not make it in the UK outside.Good for salads or cooking.

The Mobile I don't know, if the handwriting is not so good  could it be a spelling mistake if so the closest to that name I can come is Moby.

Hope this helps a bit.

thanks all for the info. Jeanine yours was exactly spot on for what I was searching for, as i'm not one much for growing toms that would be happier in the greenhouse i think i'll give the beefsteak a miss.

and yes there was a typo in the spelling, i read it wrong :-[ its 'Mobil' not mobile ::) i did a search and found this (scroll down) http://www.tomatsidan.se/TseeEng/RedsEn.htm

i don't have enough space allocated for bush varieties so I'll give the other two a miss as well.

thanks again for all the info.

You could prune down the Mobil as I see it is classed as a semi determinate and I find I have to prune them or they take over, I would treat it as  vine and have a go

Clear pink early is a good one for growing out of doors if you can avoid the blight. Mobil wasn't so successful, but it would be good in a greenhouse.

Robert Do you think I could get away with growing Clear Pink as a cordon?

Stevens706

I was given and grew Mobile a few of years ago, I grew it in the greenhouse and as a cordon and if memory is correct it was a beefsteak, but can't swear to that.

I don't know. You could try it and see, but I know it works well as a bush!
