The BBC are running a campaign called Breathing Spaces.  As part of this they are encouraging people to participate in Tree O'Clock on Saturday December 5th at 11a.m. Focus have the free saplings (just twigs really) and basically all you do is pick up your sapling, plant it and send a photo of you planting it by email to : breathingplacestrees@bbc.co.uk, stating clearly what type it is.  The trees are: cherry, hawthorn, rowan, field maple and two rmore which I can't remember.  I don't have room in my small garden to do this, but I thought it was worth passing on.
