a lot of people use the blue water pipe that builders/plumbers use these days. quite often you can get offcuts from building sites but I am sure you can buy them from builder or plumbers merchants too. have look on ebay

Yes, as Sarah says, the blue water pipe is great.  Skips/building sites/Freecycle are good sources or if you have to buy it Wickes have it.  I think it's called MDPE pipe.  If you can get them cheap in the end of season sell-off, the Wilko type rose arch can be cannibalised into hoops.  For smaller hoops to cover things like lettuce, spinach etc I've used old plastic curtain track.

The cheapest place I've seen the blue piping is our local farm supply shop. Can't remember how much but certainly cheaper than screwfix etc.

i think there are 2 sizes available - 20mm and 25mm. which is the best to use? i would ave thought it was the thicker 25mm.

Ok if you can get em cheap enough
When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"

Wouldn't have thought hula hoops would be strong enough!

I use Wicks round conduit rather that the water pipe as its cheaper.

Water pipe has to meet certain British Standards in quality, durability (ie last 50 odd years) and leak proof. Electrical conduit just has to be electric proof.

Cheapest :-
Electrical conduit - 20mm x 3m  £1.48 each / £11.84 for 10. http://www.wickes.co.uk/Round-Conduit/invt/712949

Better quality :-
MDPE Blue Waterpipe - 20mm x 25m £14.98 http://www.wickes.co.uk/MDPE-Blue-Waterpipe/invt/420600
MDPE Blue Waterpipe - 25mm x 25m £19.98 http://www.wickes.co.uk/MDPE-Pipe/invt/425072

Best quality :-
Speedfit Plastic Pipe - 22mm x 2m £6.99 http://www.wickes.co.uk/Speedfit-Plastic-Pipe/invt/421438

When Santa's about, just hoe-hoe-hoe
