after finding a recipe for beetroot and horseradish pickle I got myself all prepared today to make some tomorrow by digging some horseradish that I have had in at the lotti.. only to be very dissappointed with the fact that there is no taste at to it and it more like chewing on dessicated coconut!! :-\

Can only presume that it is because it has been in way too long?

So I am now on the search for some horseradish to use, any suggestions where I can purchase in the Leeds area please or buy via the post.. all the beetroots are ready to go for the pickle.

thanks, trina

I was surprised that your horseradish had lost it's flavour. Normally, I have to wear goggles and snorkel to scrape it because it is worse than onions to peel.

It is such an invasive plant that I wonder if you should try to dig up a bit more. Even if you think you have dug it all out, more usually comes up next year.

Frankly, I have never ever seen it sold fresh.

I googled about horseradish and found quite a lot of interesting sites.

Beetroot and horseradish do work so well together it is a shame. I used to make a mix with my own beetroot, shop bought horseradish sauce and a little mayonnaise.

Let us know how you get on.

Thanks for your advice, tried digging deeper into the pot that it was in but no luck at all.

We have searched around every ethnic food shop we could think of in  Leeds and still no luck.. they keep trying to sell us Mooli which to me just tastes like ordinary radish.

I have looked on Waitrose website and they have alot of horseradish recipes so I wondered if anyone knows if they may sell it?

I could make beetroot and chilli pickle instead but so wanted to make the horseradish version.

May be it only gets a strong flavour in Spring then when they advise you dig it up for culinary use. That is when I make it.

The good news is that it is supposed to freeze well.

Try again in Spring and if it is any good freeze it for making up with next years beetroot.

You are sure it is horseradish :'( you have and not docks I suppose ::)

Are you still looking for horseradish?

I managed to get a jar of grated horseradish from Waitrose, used it in the recipe and now just keeping fingers crossed that it works ok with the preserving mixture. :-\ Should be ok  because there wasn't any cream or similar added.

Now have 8 jars in the cupboard ready to add to devour in a few weeks time.

I still keep scouring the garden centres in the hope that I will find some root to plant and then have fresh to use.

Hubby says it needs frost,i done it last year and it wasnt hot

I heard too it needs the frost to kill the leaves to go into the roots for best flavour. I do believe larger roots ( crowns) are stronger.

I was talking about horseradish sauce to my daughter's allotment neighbour (as you do) and he said he always bought roots from Sainsburys and made his own.

This allotment was new to him, and he didn't realise he was standing up to his knees in a forest of horseradish (in fact I had helped myself to a small plant the year before). He gave me a second plant and they are growing away strongly on my own plot. Very worried by this account of tasteless roots and will dig one up tomorrow.

His plot is still infested, poor man.

calendula

might be losing taste if it is grown in a pot, better to let it grow more naturally - try the swap section as I am sure someone will have some - glad to get rid of some even  8)

grow it in a 45 gal drum, with some drainage holes around the side, (not the bottom, but near the bottom edge) then just tip out to harvest. ;)
You couldn't make it up!
