Just had my first hen die on me

Had the 17 girls about 18 months and they are two at Christmas.

Yesterday when I went to feed them I could only see 16.  I told my OH and went into the pen and found a very sickly hen.  He tried get her more upright but she shuddered and died.

I guess these things must happen, but we all did real rather down yesterday.  The others seem fine so I guess it is just one of those things.

horrible, isn't it, we've lost 5 out of our 18 in the last year, only one was egg bound, ours were ex batts so some are more worn out than others...that's the thing about chickens, feel better soon   :-\

Sorry to hear of your loss, as you say these things happen out of the blue. One of mine 'woke up dead' yesterday, right as a bobbin the day before, had her from an egg, she was four years old. We have to think of the good life we gave them, however short.

I had one of mine die - on Thursday.  She was such a character too - she was an ex bat and really scrawny - but she used to whiz - everywhere. A bit like that cartoon thing roadrunner!

I still felt sad for her tho!  I just hope she was not in pain for too long.
