Hey folks,
my new plot has a very nice if a bit weed infested Asparagus bed (3yrs old).
Advice please as I would like to keep it and get it back to its former glory.

get out as many of the weeds as possible, cut back the asparagus to just below the ground level when it dies off. add plenty  (4 - 6 ") of mulch (compost, manure), and keep weeding anything that pokes through the mulch until next spring, then commence harvest, stop cutting on mid-summers day. ;)

Best to hand weed as asparagus roots are near the surface and quite brittle so easily damaged.

Hi

As a precaution against asparagus beetle if you cut the stalks to about 4-6inches when the stalks have turned yellow ( sometime in November probably), you can then cut them back in spring. If you do this carefully you can also remove any of these insects which will have overwintered in the remains of the stalks.

Once you have cleared the bed it would be best to continue to handweed any further weeds as they or you (!) appear.
