I have rust on my runner bean leaves....is there anything that can be done about this and is it harmful to the beans that are still developing?

Rust's a minor fungus disease which is all over the place this year. It shouldn't do any harm. Last year I had it on my garlic so badly the leaves turned bright orange all over and died off. I still got a crop.

Thanks Robert you have put my mind at rest  :)

Is it OK to put the runner bean plants in the composter when they have finished?

Sorry should have said even if they are infected with rust.

Robert_Brenchley

Yes, don't worry about it. Clear up the leaves with rust, and compost them. Rust's a fact of life in damp summers; it's all over my site this year, but it does little or no harm.
