I planted leeks very late this year and they are still wee straggly things. What can I do to plump them up and make them grow bigger? I don't mind if they are not giants, but it would be good if they got big enough to actually use!!
2012 - Snow in February, non-stop rain till July. Blight and rot are rife. Thieving voles cause strife. But first runner beans and lots of greens. Follow an English allotment in urban France: http://roos-and-camembert.blogspot.com

Mine seemed to take a very long time to go from the straggly stage to the reasonable size.  Seemed to do better once I had planted them out and fed them.

hope you get an answer as mine need plumping up too

Mine also seem to be a bit thin. My RHS book recommends adding nitrogen rich fertilizer (25g/square meter) if needed, in midsummer, so I am giving that a go, although a bit late.

I fed mine a couple of times with the tomato food my blighted toms no longer needed.
Brought them along a treat, then changed to Blood Fish and Bone for the long haul into winter.
Why plant rows of 24 lettuces??

A high nitrogen fertiliser is the way forward Antipodes.... and you can probably rely on enough warm weather... here in the Midlands the soft growth would be damaged by the frosts which can arrive from the end of Sept....  :'(

Mine arelooking really good this year, planted oarsmen..... also planted in a block this year instead of my usual rows, don't know if this had anything to do with it?...... but will be doing the same next year   :-*
