Hi. All my sweetcorn seems to be ready at once.  We are eating it and giving it away but are still left with a lot.  What is the best way of keeping/storing this.  Should I leave them on the plants until needed.  How long will they last on there or do I take them all off and store them somehow?  If that is the case do I leave them wrapped in their leaves.   Do they freeze?. Sorry - so many questions.

They don't keep very well on the plant. We take them off... strip off the leaves, wrap individually in clingfilm and freeze... good for up to 12 months...  :)

Tulipa

I do the same as Saddad, just finishing off last year's. :-[  They freeze really well and can be zapped in the microwave from frozen for about 5 minutes.  They can go over quite quickly on the plant so best picked when ready.

enjoy....

Yes freeze-I`ve frozen some this morning.

They taste nearly as good from frozen and certainly better than anything you can buy.

Or make soup-crab and sweetcorn go well together and freeze any left over

Don't leave them on the plant whatever you do. Last year I harvested 1/2 mine one weekend and went to get the rest the following week and every one have been stripped bare by either rats or squirrels!!

I went to my plot last night to harvest and 4 had already been got at, still I harvested 25. We were up til 11pm stripping (the cobs!) and freezing them.

Oh how I love this time of year!

we strip the kernels off some, less freezer space and handy to add to dishes  ;D

Manics, how do you strip the kernels off, tried one year and just ended up with a heap of mush?

Ray uses a sharp knife, stands the cob up and slices them off, takes a bit of skill buhe manages it fine.. I also sit and push them off, long winded and usually end up eating far too many  ;D

Job sorted for hubby next year then, he doesn't eat it!   ;D

Thanks Manics.
