why are potatoes growing tomatoes?

noticed today that my main crop spuds have started growing tomatoe like balls from side shoots? i opened one and it was full of seeds. i didnt know that taters grew fruit!
is this significant to the harvesting time of my crop?

No, but you can grow the seeds on and develop a new variety if you want!

We call them Tatie Apples, is it best to pull them off?

There is belief in some quarters that removing flowers from potatoes increases the crop....dont know if thats true or not...but if you do remove the flowers,you wont get "Tatie Apples"
