we've put some leeks and beetroot in where the potatoes were, plus you can make a late sowing of dwarf french beans  :)

Yes do try to get two crops a year if you can. The soil may be too well dug for brassicas after potatoes but tread it down to compact it and you could transfer PSB or sprouts there. Savoy, winter lettuce or cauli. Spring cabbage. Kale. Any thing that will give you results in winter or spring. You can get salad harvest for later on in the year. Late carrots and swede.

If you decide to cover it, It can be used to plant over winter Onions in November.

I have read (new to this myself) that florence fennel can be sown in July
Thanks

I've planted Autumn carrots, lettuce and broccoli today, I think it's OK as it says I can on the back of the packet. This is my first year of growing anything though I have to say that in my ignorance I planted cabbage, swede and cauliflowers in a freshly dug raised bed. This bed had been weeded and forked and I sank into it up to my shins when I mistakenly stood on it as I was preparing it.
I later read that Brassica beds should be firm, it was too late for me as they were already in. However I took heed of this advice and stamped down the area I was about to plant my Brussels sprouts in (they are doing very well).
Probably beginners luck but the brassicas in the fluffy bed have came out very well IMHO so I've put a picture in.

Well I tried to put one in from my gallery but it's beyond me.  ;D
