Wooden Boxes

Anyone know of a source of wooden boxes? I need some to store some root crops in peat substitute or sand.

I have tried the local off licenses in the hope they would have some wooden wines cases but no luck as yet.

Any other ideas?

We managed to store beetroot last year in one of those cheap small plastic tubs with clip on lid.  Filled it with sand and kept it in the shed where it was not to warm but frost proof.

Don't have any ideas for getting wooden boxes apart from making some up yourself, perhaps you could use old palletts as a source of cheap wood. Would cardboard boxes not work as well, there are plenty of those around.

just a thought here what about a barrel ???

45 gallon plastic barrel cut into 2 or 3 sections, wooden floor nailed in then layed as follows from floor upwards
bottom part of barrel
sand
crop
sand
loose wooden shelf on top of sand
sand
crop
sand
and that would be the bottom 1/3rd of barrel filled and then carry on with the next section of barrell
just rember itll be a heavey devil lol make sure its out your way

Someone down our lottie got lots of fish boxes.
they are four planks of wood with hinges attached and they interlink into square boxes and stack on top of each other. Very handy

I use old supermarket banana and apple boxes, lined with dark material from same supermarket fruit stalls, then near dry peaty type soil. I only have three layers in each box, but it kept my carrots and parsnips a treat last year. I collected potato sacks and onion string sacks by forraging round the bins at the local market - Dave reckons I look like a bag lady, but I don't care.
