How much space should I have left between pea seeds?

I have sown all of my pea seeds now in the ground where they are to grow. I have left around 1" between each seed.

Is this acceptable, or should they have been sown thinner?

Thicker... as we save our own we can afford to stand them on top of each other as well....  :)

Its fine.  You will have one plant every 3 inches..... (after one for the birds, one that does not grow,  which leaves one left for you.)  8) 8)

" one for the mouse, one for the crow, one to rot and one to grow..."  ;D

I've planted mine in 2" plugs with 3 in each plug. All have germinated, how tall should they be when planted out & is a poundland cloche enough protection for them until they get going They are Hatif d'Annonay from Real Seed. I've 24 plugs, as I want to save some seeds should I plant more. They are a mange-tout/full pod pea.

Poundland cloches will keep the birds off but not the mice. I'd put the plugs right bang next to each other. I put a dozen or more seeds in a 3 inch pot, and plant twelve to a wigwam.

You should get enought to bulk up your stock from 72 seedlings... I'd put them all round an 8 cane wigwam...  :)

I had just 10 seeds of purple podded last year, ate loads and still managed to end up with 150 seeds.

I chit my peas and then plant them 4 at a time under a plastic bottle.  I then keep a eye out for slugs because if one gets under the bottle they will hoover off all the seedlings.

Like your poem Saddad, but how many for the slugs.

Can I add a bit.

But when nothing grows and everything fails,
I put it down to the slugs and snails.

It's not my poem... (sadly) I think it's from Piers the Ploughman... a 14th Century book.  :)

The peas I've sown are short ones so is a wigwam still needed?

No then, but some support up to about three foot... "peasticks"  :-X

I have sown 4 3m rows of peas to grow up a 50cm piece of plastic netting. I have managed to fit in an average of 70 seeds per row.

How does that sound?

I have covered the whole structure with netting and secured it down.
