Asparagus

My other half wants me to plant some asparagus......   >:(  hate things I can't dig up at the end of the year!!!

Is it too late to plant some crowns this year (I know I can't cut any for 2 years)... and can anyone recommend a variety? I heard all male are best.....

And any further tips would be great!!!!!!!

I put some connovers collosal in a fortnight ago and am awaiting the first shoots - fingers crossed!
