In the System Volume Information folder there are a few massive files, totalling several gigabytes.
Does anybody know what these do?

Probably memory swap files (used to have an extension .SWP), but I expect someone  else will know for certain.

They take up vast amounts of space for no apparent reason. The worst case I have seen so far was 180Gb of a 500Gb drive taken up by the System Volume Information folder.
Restricting the space allocated doesn't work reliably so the simplest solution is to switch system restore off & on again every now & then to clear the space.

I've just clicked on the SVI folder and get a "access is denied " message. I looked in properties and it tells me there are no files in folder taking up no space, but I know restore is switched on as I've had to use it on a couple of occasions? Do restore files auto delete after a certain time?

I am glad I moved to Ubuntu/Linux. Total used on an 80GB HDD = 3.3GB.

Hi,

Sounds like the back up files are there and you need to change the time span when you back up.
I have changed mine to a monthly back up instead of the de fault of a daily back up.

Got them back now to put some tread on them
