Help Tree Trouble!

Help Please...

I had what i thought was aphid leaf curl on my Damson Tree (only a few years old). This was followed by a greeny/grey algae/lichen that grew on it over winter.

As it was looking very worse for wear i knicked a bit of bark to see what it was like underneath.....instead of a healthily green which is what i expected if it was any good, it was a rusty brown.

is it worth saving???

if it goes can i replant in the same area?
