I am growing them this year - coming on and need thinning.  Didnt know about tying them - can't be bothered with that - they'll have to take their chances I think!  I'll report back.

Sinbad - you stick to your guns though and good on you!

Growing cos lettuce (the bog standard supermarket stuff, I'm afraid) for the first time this year.  Never knew there was so much to it! Wish I'd planted them closer together now as I certainly don't want to be bothered with string - too many other jobs to do.  ;)

Gosh oh golly gosh.

What a lot of argument over a simple lettuce.

Most of us do not grow commonly found produce.

We know that supermarket varieties are there because they last ages after being picked. We grow varieties which wilt too quickly for retailability  but give the home grower a lovely salad.

My suggestion my love is to grow half his way and half your way then play.
Spot The Difference.

Next year you should have the confidence to make your own decisions and grow. Your way...

With PS on this I don't think it makes a difference but sometimes you need to be "political"....catch my drift.
